ThinKing June – Screws from Weippert made up to 80 percent lighter with plastics

The future of lightweight technology belongs to clever material mixes. Bonding elements therefore play a vital part in lightweight applications. Mechanical bonding with screws is often the method of choice. However, bonding elements made of heavy materials such as steel can often have a significant impact on weight, eliminating the advantages of lightweight materials used elsewhere in the product.

The German company Weippert Kunststofftechnik GmbH & Co. KG has introduced screws to the market that are up to 80 percent lighter than their steel counterparts. By using short lengths of glass fiber in the plastic, the material is able to achieve a relatively high tensile strength for plastic products.
