AtTrack GmbH implements a completely new vehicle concept with the TG 700 light three seater
AtTrack’s TG 700 sets the scene for a “new form of mobility”. The light four-wheeled vehicle with the striking design looks like a crossover between a quad, motorbike and convertible. Weighing in at just 325 kilograms, the TG 700 is economic, high performance and is a great ride for three people: the very essence of lightweight thinking. A futuristic electric version of the TE 700 speedster is now on the starting grid and ready to go.
The Development Agency for Lightweighting Baden-Württemberg presents this innovation in the February edition of its ThinKing. Leichtbau BW GmbH uses this label to showcase excellent lightweight technology products and services from Baden-Württemberg.
The TG 700 is powered by an economic combustion engine. It is ideal for both long and short overland spins with up to three passengers. The vehicle runs on conventional super-rated petrol. The open speedster owes its high performance to its efficient lightweight design. With a basic weight of 325 kilograms it can carry an additional load of 245 kilograms, for example. In comparison, Vehicles in the compact class, weighing between 1.2 and 1.5 tonnes, can only carry loads of around 500 kilograms.
The low average rev speed level and high torque of the one-cylinder petrol engine guarantees driving enjoyment and real added value. The engine accelerates the 2.8 metre long and 1.3 metre wide vehicle up to a maximum speed of 100 km/h with engine power of just 15 kilowatts. This power places the TG 700 firmly in the EU light vehicle class (four-wheel motor vehicle for the carriage of passengers).
The vehicle was developed by AtTrack director Dr. Ulrich Schiefer and his team. The TG 700 has made one of his dreams for a new vehicle concept come true. Schiefer: “Our aim is to combine the fun of driving a motorbike with the safety of a four-wheel vehicle.” Schiefer, who holds a doctorate in engineering, has many years of experience in the automotive industry, including with BMW, Aston Martin and Porsche. In 1999, for example, he was the senior project manager for the BMW racing programme at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He set up his own business in 2004 with the aim of combining the development of sustainable products and corporate consulting with ethical principles.
The vehicle's low weight comes from an ingenious choice of materials, which is partly due to Schiefer's experience in sports car racing. The TG 700's running board, for example, is made of fiberglass and polypropylene. The heaviness of every component in this small-series, handmade vehicle is carefully weighed up. "We're like lightweight truffle hogs sniffing around for just the right materials and construction methods,” says the managing director.
The vehicle frame, for example, is made of steel, whereas the chassis is made of aluminium. Sustainability is particularly important for AtTrack’s team of ten, as demonstrated by the use of natural fibers in the TG 700. The mix of lightweight materials, such as a combination of plastics and steel, keeps on confronting the designers with new challenges.
Critical kilograms are economised on from the moment the vehicle concept is drawn up. A good example is the engine, which has been deliberately downsized to one cylinder. Despite the small engine capacity, its low weight makes it a highly efficient and low fuel consumption vehicle. The electric version of the three-seater TE 700 has recently been launched in the market and is especially convenient for city driving.
