ThinKing November – Super thin heating panels take on bulky radiators



A true lightweight solution weighing only 100 grams per square meter – minimal material use and low energy consumption saves resources and benefits the environment

With a thickness of only 0.5 millimeters, the Lofec heating panel is one of the thinnest and lightest heating panel in the world. The heating element itself is a real lightweight champion requiring minimal raw materials and weighing in at only 100 grams per square meter. The panels use carbon fibers integrated into a PET film. The heating elements can be used as a stand-alone heating system or in combination with existing heating systems as well as a means of mold removal.

The heating elements manufactured by Lofec GmbH are extremely thin with a thickness of only 0.5 millimeters making them one of the thinnest heating panels available on the market. The elements can be installed almost anywhere, including behind tiles, underneath floors, in the ceiling, beneath a plaster wall or behind wallpaper. Thanks to their size, the heating elements can be hidden from sight to warm the room without altering its appearance. This offers designers and architects increased design freedom by avoiding large bulky radiators allowing the heater to be “tucked away” behind walls or ceilings. The numerous installation possibilities are made possible by the heater’s low weight of only 100 grams. This low weight is achieved through using typical lightweight materials. The Lofec heating panels use carbon fibers in a PET film to create a lightweight heating element. The design of the heating panels closely follows the lightweighting philosophy by using as little material as possible in order to save resources. An added benefit is the lower power consumption of the heating system in comparison to other heaters such as night storage heaters.

The innovative heating system operates at a harmless low voltage of 24 volts. The heat is produced through the electrical resistance of the carbon fibers which generate heat through radiation. This is regarded as the most natural form of heat generation. The heating elements do not heat the room by heating the air like a typical radiator, but rather through thermal radiation which heats the objects and bodies in the room just like the sun’s rays do.

Lofec GmbH works in close collaboration with the construction industry and its products have been approved and recommended by several contractors. The Lofec heating panels are the only electric floor heating system which has been approved by the manufacturers of parquet and designer floors. The heating panels are available in three different output versions: 60 watts, 110 watts or 220 watts per square meter. Skilled craftsmen can install the panels in a variety of locations, including within plaster walls. The heating elements themselves are very resistant to damage. It is possible to hang up a picture or cut out a section for a new socket without affecting the functionality of the heater. Thanks to the low voltage technology (24V), the heaters are suitable for use in bathrooms as a floor heater or even in showers or behind the walls.

More comfort for allergy sufferers
The Lofec heating panels can be used as an enhancement to existing heating systems such as in colder spots in the living room that always need a space heater or as a full stand-alone heating system for entire houses or apartments. The heating panel system also has an added benefit for allergy suffers. Typical radiators cause the heated air to move, and the temperature difference causes the heated air to rise. The rising heat pulls plenty of dust into the air along with it. The radiating heat of the electric panel system counters this effect by reducing the temperature difference between the floor and ceiling to a mere two to three degrees on average. This hinders excess air circulation in the room which reduces the spread of dust.

Patented temperature regulator prevents mold

Another field of application for panel heaters is mold removal. Mold grows in places with a low surface temperature humidity and moisture can seep in. Panel heaters can be built into the walls to prevent the growth of mold. Lofec’s patented temperature regulator ensures that the wall is heated slightly to 13 to 17 degrees Celsius in order to keep the temperature above the dew point. This prevents the buildup of the condensate that mold needs to grow. The regulator automatically adjusts the temperature and operation times to keep the energy consumption as low as possible.

In comparison to night storage heaters, the low energy panel heaters can cut power costs by more than half. This is not only good for your wallet, but for the environment as well. If the heater is powered by self-produced energy from a photovoltaic system combined with energy storage, a high degree of self-sufficiency can be achieved and homes can be heated without producing any emissions. Furthermore, the system is completely maintenance free because the heating elements do not suffer from any mechanical wear.
