The joint exhibition stand “Lightweighting in Baden-Wuerttemberg” was a highlight of the HANNOVER MESSE Industrial Supply 2017 in Hall 6. From 24 to 28 April 2017, eleven exhibitors from Baden-Wuerttemberg presented their lightweighting innovations on 220 square meters of Hall 6 F30. The mid-size companies at the joint stand represented nearly the entire lightweighting value chain, each focusing on one of the key development themes such as digitization, additive manufacturing, hybrid materials or new possibilities in design, processing and simulation.
With the expansion of hybrid material manufacturing, mixed joints are becoming increasingly important, particularly in automobile manufacturing. TRUMPF Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH presented at the joint stand an interlocking bond between metal and plastic that does not require any glue or bonding agent. This allows completely new construction possibilities to be implemented that have a stronger bond than glued components and which can simplify the production of these components. The laser manufacturer TRUMPF has also amassed a wealth of experience in additive manufacturing.
T-RTM process provides increased stiffness
As lightweighting concepts continue to grow, lightweight technical textiles are also enjoying a revival. Gustav Gerster GmbH & Co. KG will use the joint exhibition stand to present a spiral fabric for added individual support of round components. This is made possible by specially fitting the material to the diameter of the component. This can help reduce weight in comparison to steel and aluminum washers and spacers.
Albert Handtmann Elteka GmbH & Co. KG will present its newly developed composite material HICOMPELT® - a composite material made with carbon or glass fiber mats. By implementing low viscosity polyamides, a high proportion volume of fiber material of up to 65 percent can be achieved. The innovative composite material is produced using the so called T-RTM process (thermoplastic resin transfer molding) which produces an incredibly stiff product.
Combination of titanium and AM makes exhaust pipes lighter
The potential of combining new processing techniques will be demonstrated by C & C Bark Metalldruckguss und Formenbau GmbH with its hot-chamber die casting. This process allows lightweight magnesium die-cast components to be formed easily and energy efficiently. The procedure provides a significant reduction in the melting energy required as well as in the return material from hot-chamber casting.
By combining new materials and production techniques, several kilograms can be shaved off the weight of modern vehicles. The Eberspächer Group and the Prototechnik lightweight technology center will use the joint stand to present their lightweight exhaust systems which are made out of titanium and other materials and various components produced through additive manufacturing. In comparison to previously optimized exhaust systems in serial production, the weight of the new products can be reduced by about 50 percent. This is made possible by the thin walled structures and specialized know-how in the processing of special materials.
Ceramic surfaces allow for adaptation to specific applications
The combination of different materials in hybrid lightweighting puts new demands on the qualities of material surfaces such as ceramic coatings. With the CERANOD® coating technology of ELB – Eloxalwerk Ludwigsburg Helmut Zerrer GmbH, aluminum surfaces can be precisely tailored to the requirements of different industries. The exhibition at the joint stand will present various geometries such as impellers and turbines coated in a ceramic surface layer.
Fastening technology will play an increasingly vital role in lightweighting. Weippert Kunststofftechnik GmbH produces nuts and bolts out of high density plastic with a glass fiber content of 30 to 60 percent. Depending on the technical requirements of an application, these nuts can replace parts made out of aluminum or steel.
Every gram counts – screws and gears made out of plastic
Small but significant weight reduction can be achieved by implementing the lightweight and precise plastic gears manufactured by Werner Bauser GmbH. These gears offer the advantage of being about 40 percent lighter than comparable parts made of metal. Lightweight core materials, such as the foam filling produced by Gaugler & Lutz oHG are also gaining in popularity, as the joint exhibition stand will show.
Material substitution in another area of increasing importance to intelligent lightweighting. Grieshaber GmbH & Co. specializes in the production of precision parts made of non-ferrous metals with a particular focus on lightweight aluminum.
The Landesagentur-BW is organizing the joint stand in Hall 6 F30 together with Baden-Württemberg International. The state agency is also partnering with HANNOVER MESSE Industrial Supply and the advisory board of the trade fair.
